Digital Preservation Best Practices

Yesterday I saw an announcement of Archivematica, Linux-based "comprehensive digital preservation system" from Canada, as its authors has declared, http://archivematica.org. As an non-tech educated digital projects librarian, or officially Digital Information Manager, I'm very interested in comprehensive-out-from-the-box solutions for digital preservation (but also for digital libraries/repositories), which are rare or usually too technical. Archivematica sounds promising and we will try to test it in the near future to see if it will meet our expectations. The beauty is that it works under virtual machine (as a virtual appliance), but there are instances prepared for Live DVD and Live USB stick installation and play. The downfall is 4 Gigs large installation file, but, on the other hand, the sheer size of the installation is somehow trustfully.

Archivematica announcement was accompanied by the information about presentation made by colleagues Slavko Manojlovich from Memorial University of Newfoundland and Michael J. Bennett, University of Connecticut. The presentation title is "Digital Preservation Best Practices, Lessons Learned From Across The Pond" and it is downloadable at http://digitalcommons.uconn.edu/context/libr_pres/article/1032/type/native/viewcontent. I found this presentation very interesting and useful, with many presented informations about digital preservation and implemented practices in Europe and North America (just to say that there are 78 slides and ppt file itself is 8MB heavy). For everybody dealing or thinking about digitization and digital preservation this is a valuable resource and starting point for further research.
